Skyscanner (a global travel search engine) has determined the best time to book holiday travel this year, based on historical data it has compiled from more than 50 million of its users. Skyscanner has found that the highest savings for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s are available no more than four weeks prior to those dates, with potential savings even available for those travelers booking last minute flights the week of travel.
Randi Wolfson, Head of Communications for the Americas, Skyscanner, said that Skyscanner compiled this information “in the hopes of helping travelers see that holiday travel is something they can budget for and plan with ease so they can spend their well-earned time off with loved ones.” A more detailed analysis of Skyscanner’s results on the best time to book holiday travel is in the infographic below.
It’s important to take these results with a grain of salt, however. You are often able to get better mileage points deals the earlier out you book a flight. You may also be more limited in your flight selection the longer you wait to book, so later booked flights may be more likely to have a layover or longer flight times. I would recommend staying on top of flight deals and monitoring prices, in addition to keeping the knowledge of Skyscanner’s data in mind, to make sure you aren’t missing any amazing flight deals along the way. I recently found a flight deal for travel around Labor Day Weekend from Philadelphia to Los Angeles for $134 round-trip, so there are definitely deals to be had!!

- Accessibility: For travelers without a specific destination in mind, Skyscanner’s Everywhere search tool shows the top flight deals for domestic and international destinations from a specific departure location, with options to search in a given month, for specific dates or even in a given year!
- Affordability: Setting up price alerts allows travelers to track the cost of travel and receive notifications when the price drops to a specific destination or on a specific route.
- Flexibility: Skyscanner offers a Show Whole Month search tool so users can glance at flight prices for the entire month and potentially adjust travel dates accordingly.
