Flight Deals: Tips and Tricks

March 17, 2016

Flight Deals

Hello loves! Since many of you were interested in the way I book flight deals from my Instagram post a couple of weeks ago, I thought I would give you some insight into the various travel sites that I use regularly to find a good deal! Hope this helps you in your travels a little!

Websites

1.  The Flight Deal: The Flight Deal, a personal favorite, gives real time information on travel deals for travelers (primarily in the United States). Rather than checking their website regularly, I actually get most of my information from them through their Facebook page, which I follow. On Facebook, they post targeted posts depending on where you are located, so you aren’t bombarded with flight deals from every single city in the US.
NOTE: A trick I use to make sure I see all of their Facebook posts from my home base of NYC, is that I have pinned/starred their Facebook page on my Newsfeed on Facebook, so whenever I open Facebook (which I do many times a day!), I see their deals first on my Newsfeed.
Similar Sites: A couple other sites with similar deals are Secret Flying (covers flights departing from all over the world) and Travel Pirates. Both of these websites also have Facebook pages!

2.  Skyscanner: If you are looking for a more proactive way to search for cheap flights, Skyscanner is a great tool for that. It always hunts for the best prices with a variety of combinations of flights. One thing to be wary of is that Sky Scanner links to outside sites to purchase flights, and occasionally there will be a hidden fee that doesn’t show up until you actually try and purchase the flight. It also links to a variety of different sites to purchase, and some of these have better practices and policies than others.

3.  Kayak: I frequently use Kayak when I’m looking for an easy way to search domestic flights, since it’s very user friendly. I also love its “Explore” tab, which provides an interactive way to view cheap flights in any given month. The downside with Kayak is that certain low-cost airlines (such as Southwest) don’t show up in its search results, so don’t forget to take a look at those sites independently or use another search site such as Skyscanner.

4.  The Points Guy: If any of you have a lot of airline/hotel/credit card miles, The Points Guy is a great person to follow to learn how to spend them and earn more efficiently.  I’ve booked many flights and hotels through my airline and hotel miles earned and saved!

5.  Flyer Talk: For really in-depth information on everything travel-related, including real-time error fare news (sometimes these deals last a matter of minutes!) and flight deals, Flyer Talk is your go-to spot. I’ve spent hours reading their message boards and all of the amazing first-hand information in them.

6. Skiplagged: Skiplagged is a recent discovery and super amazing when you are looking for last minute flights and one-way flights especially. It provides you with flight deals taking into account that a flight might be stopping at your destination as a layover on the way to another destination. If you are traveling without checked in bags (because if you do check in bags, your bags will end up at the final destination of the flight rather than the layover location), this is a great site to use.

Timing
There are also a number of theories about the best time and day to book a flight deal. The general consensus is that a weekday is always better than a weekend, and Tuesday and Wednesday are the best days to book. An article also recently came out from the Huffington Post saying that exactly 54 days before the date of your flight is on average the best time to book a flight.

Hope you all are able to book an awesome flight or travel deal soon! I can’t wait to head to Europe next month with my already booked flight deal! And once you book that awesome flight, don’t forget to look into the variety of accommodation options! XOXO
